Staying Active Outside Of The Gym

Let’s face it, we have it pretty good in Southern California.  There is no reason we shouldn’t be able to stay active outdoors year round.  Here are some fun in the sun winter activities around LA that can help you shake up your gym schedule with some good old fashioned playing outside.

RUNYAN CANYON PARK Runyon Canyon is a 160-acre park located on the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. Choose from one of the three hiking routes, Fuller Gate—Runyon Canyon Road (easy), the Star Trail (medium), or the Hero Trail (difficult) for priceless views of the Hollywood sign, the Sunset Strip and the LA Basin.

SHERMAN OAKS CASTLE PARK The whole family will enjoy the fun challenges of miniature golf in the lush surroundings of Sherman Oaks Castle Park. An 18-hole round of mini golf is $6.50 for adults ages 13 to 64, $5.50 for children (5-12) and seniors (64+). Children age 4 and under are free with a paid adult.

THE STANDARD HOTEL DOWNTOWN Spend the day outdoors without sacrificing luxury. Head to the Rooftop of The Standard Downtown L.A. to enjoy their heated swimming pool and Biergarten fare.

LOS FELIZE GOLF COURSE If you’re a novice golfer, the Los Feliz Golf Course is for you. Green fees are only $8 on the weekend, perfect for those learning the basics. In the 1996 film, Swingers, Ron Livingston asks Jon Favreau whether he should play Goofy in a scene that was filmed at Los Feliz Golf Course.

CATALINA ISLAND A part of the Channel Islands archipelago, Catalina Island is located off the coast of Southern California. Only an hour from the mainland by boat, it is a great day-trip option for those looking to escape the city crowds. The protected waters surrounding Catalina are ideal for snorkeling, since they feature tall kelp forests, healthy coral reefs, clear water and an abundance of outgoing fish.

BALBOA ISLAND Technically a group of 3 artificial islands, the Balboa Island community is located in the harbor of Newport Beach.  Rent a paddleboard and enjoy exploring the calm waterways that run through and around the islands.
